Lewis Payne, seated and manacled, at the Washington Navy Yard about the time of his 21st birthday in April 1865, three months before he was hanged as one of the Lincoln assassination conspirators.
Saw this photo at the “Manhunt: Chasing Lincoln’s Killer” exhibit at the Newseum a few weeks ago and said to my friend, really loudly, “damn he was hot, it’s a shame they hanged him.” People looked at me funny. I stand by my statement.

When I saw his photo in my photojournalism and the photo essay class. I did think he was quite handsome — my prof said he was known for being that. But uh, it is not a shame that they hanged him. WHAT A JERK!

haha as a kid (like 13-15 years old) i was really into civil war history. i wanted to re-enact more than anything and i spent my time reading civil war books and hanging out in an aol civil war chatroom.
i, too, thought lewis payne was a gorgeous man. still do, in fact.

Wow. He’s fantastically beautiful. That is all.
